Ledger® Live: Login | Getting Started™ — Step-by-Step Guide

A concise, secure, and colorful walkthrough to get you logged in, manage accounts, and start using Ledger® Live confidently.

Overview

What is Ledger® Live?

Ledger® Live is the desktop and mobile app that lets you manage crypto accounts connected to your Ledger hardware wallet. It provides portfolio overview, secure transactions, app management, and device updates. This guide walks through login, initial setup, account addition, and security-first best practices.

Before You Begin

Checklist

  • Official Ledger hardware wallet (Ledger Nano S, Nano S Plus, or Nano X)
  • Recovery phrase stored securely (never digital)
  • Latest version of Ledger® Live downloaded from Ledger® Official
  • USB cable or Bluetooth (for Nano X)
  • Computer or mobile device with internet access
Security tip: Always verify you downloaded Ledger® Live from an official Ledger domain and check the app signature when prompted by your OS.

Step 1 — Install Ledger® Live

Download & Run

  1. Visit the official Ledger® Live page and download the installer for your OS.
  2. Run the installer and follow prompts. Grant permissions only when the source is verified.
  3. Open Ledger® Live after installation; you’ll see a welcome screen and options to Set up as new or Restore device.

Notes for macOS / Windows

macOS may show a security prompt — allow the app only after confirming the downloaded file came from ledger.com. Windows users may need to accept an unsigned driver depending on device and OS.

Step 2 — Connect and Initialize Your Ledger Device

Physical Setup

  1. Connect your Ledger device using the original USB cable or Bluetooth.
  2. On the device, choose Set up as new device if it’s new, or Restore if you already have a recovery phrase.
  3. Create a PIN on-device (4–8 digits). Memorize it — don't store digitally.

Recovery Phrase

Write down the 24-word recovery phrase on the physical card supplied. This is the master key to your funds — never share it, never enter it into a website, and never store it in the cloud.

Step 3 — Ledger® Live Login

Open Ledger® Live & Pair

  1. Open Ledger® Live. If prompted, allow a connection to your device in the OS dialog.
  2. Choose Manager to confirm the device is recognized — Ledger® Live will request device permission on the hardware. Use the device buttons to confirm.
  3. Once paired, use Portfolio and Accounts to view balances and operations.

PIN & Login Flow

Ledger® Live doesn’t ask for your recovery phrase — operations are authorized on-device using your PIN and button confirmations. This protects you from remote compromise.

Step 4 — Add Accounts & Install Apps

Install Apps (Coin Apps) on Device

  1. Open Manager in Ledger® Live.
  2. Install the apps for the coins you want to use (Bitcoin, Ethereum, etc.). Each app uses device storage — uninstalling does not delete funds.

Add Accounts

  1. Go to Accounts » Add account.
  2. Select the coin and follow prompts — Ledger® Live will scan addresses and add existing accounts derived from your recovery phrase.

Security — Best Practices (Essential)

Protect Your Recovery Phrase

Store the recovery phrase offline and physically. Use a safe, fireproof place or a metal backup. Do not type it into phones, computers, or websites.

Software Hygiene

  • Keep Ledger® Live and your device firmware up to date via official channels.
  • Never install software from third-party sources claiming to interact with Ledger® Live unless verified.
  • Enable operating-system-level antivirus if available, but remember that Ledger's security rests on device confirmation.
When in doubt — pause and verify.

Troubleshooting & FAQs

Device Not Recognized?

  1. Try a different USB cable or port. Avoid USB hubs for initial pairing.
  2. On Nano X, confirm Bluetooth permissions and pairing in OS settings.
  3. Restart Ledger® Live and your device; then check Manager.

Forgotten PIN?

If you forget the PIN, you must reset the device and restore from your recovery phrase. That’s why the phrase is critical — without it, funds cannot be recovered.

Wrap-Up & Next Steps

What You Can Do Next

  • Send or receive small test transactions first to confirm flow.
  • Explore advanced features: staking, Swap, third-party app integrations (only via Ledger® Live manager-approved apps).
  • Bookmark the official support pages and the Ledger blog (links above) for official updates and security notices.

Final reminder: Ledger® Live is a secure bridge to your hardware wallet — key actions always require on-device confirmation. Keep your recovery phrase offline and treat it as the single most valuable item.
